“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.” Genesis 2:24-25
It’s not a popular message in our day, and many mistake it for hate. But from the beginning–Day 6 of the Creation–God ordained marriage to be one man and one woman for life. And just like Genesis 1:1, Satan would like to shadow every word of this ordinance with questions. Does a married man need to leave his parents? Does he need to be united in marriage? Does it have to be a wife? Does the couple really and can they actually become one flesh?
As with all of the matters that Satan colors grey, he’s not so concerned about which one of these questions he trips you up on, just as long as he gets you on at least one of them. He doesn’t care about you or any other human being on the planet. He only seeks to steal, kill and destroy us [John 10:10] out of envy for our glorious future.
That is why he wants to put every vile corruption of the beautiful relationship that God intended for marriage only and every perversion of the marriage relationship before our eyes from the youngest possible age. Satan seeks to get a foot in the door of our understanding of love, so that he can continue to barge his way into our lives to wreak havoc both in and through us.
Believe it. What God intends for our good, Satan would twist for his own demented delight and our demise.
The first man and woman were created naked as newborn babes. Yet they had no shame. Shame is the guiltily embarrassed response of realizing our sin. But Adam and Eve had no sin in them at the Creation. And having not yet eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they didn’t even think sinful thoughts of their situation. All they knew was to love God and to love their God-given spouse as themselves [Matthew 22:37-39]. The greatest two commandments at their very inception.
Imagine if everything today was as God intended from this very good beginning. Imagine if everyone truly did love God and kept His ordinances. Imagine if everyone loved every other human being as they loved themselves [and that Satan didn’t pervert even the love of self!]
Do you question why God ordained the marriage relationship as He did? Do you question His other ordinances and commands in your life? Have you ever stopped to question who has actually seeded these questions in your heart and whether they will ultimately build you up or destroy you?
